In Memoriam: Honoring Shirley Hoksbergen

1930–2025

Humanity for Prisoners joins the Hoksbergen family in mourning the passing of Shirley Hoksbergen, a longtime friend and faithful supporter of our mission.

Shirley and her husband, the Rev. Al Hoksbergen, shared a close friendship with Humanity for Prisoners founder Doug Tjapkes that began in 1990. After Al became pastor of Ferrysburg Community Church, where Doug served as Music Director, the two families developed a lasting relationship built on faith, friendship, and a shared commitment to serving others.

When Humanity for Prisoners—then known as INNOCENT—was founded in 2001, Al and Doug worked together to publish WHY? Answers to Difficult Questions from Prisoners and Their Families, a resource that continues to be available through our office today. Throughout the years, Al and Shirley remained steadfast supporters of the organization's work and mission.

Their commitment to Humanity for Prisoners continued long after Al's passing in 2014. At Shirley's memorial service, her family honored that commitment by suggesting memorial gifts to Humanity for Prisoners in lieu of flowers—a final reflection of the compassion and generosity that defined her life.

We are deeply grateful for Shirley's friendship, her faithful support, and the lasting impact she and Al had on Humanity for Prisoners.
