Healthcare Advocacy
Ensuring people in prison receive the care and dignity they deserve.
People incarcerated in Michigan frequently face serious barriers to receiving timely and adequate medical care. Prison healthcare systems are often under-resourced, slow to respond, and difficult to navigate without outside support. As a result, many incarcerated people experience untreated or worsening medical conditions, delayed diagnoses, or a lack of follow-up care. Humanity for Prisoners provides medical advocacy for prisoners in Michigan to help address these gaps and protect basic dignity.
Our healthcare advocacy focuses on prison medical care issues ranging from chronic illnesses and cancer diagnoses to mental health needs, dental problems, mobility limitations, and end-of-life care. Families often contact us when they are concerned about prison medical neglect in Michigan or are unsure how to get medical help in prison for their loved one.
How Our Healthcare Advocacy Works
Humanity for Prisoners supports incarcerated people and their families by helping them understand prison healthcare processes and by advocating for appropriate attention when concerns arise. Our staff is assisted by a panel of volunteer healthcare professionals across multiple specialties who help us assess situations and identify reasonable standards of care.
In addition to working directly with prisoners and their loved ones, we coordinate when appropriate with oversight and accountability bodies, including the Legislative Corrections Ombudsman’s Office, the MDOC Bureau of Healthcare Services, and other relevant entities. This collaborative approach allows us to raise concerns about prisoner healthcare problems in Michigan through established channels.
Advocacy, Not Medical Advice
We do not provide medical advice or treatment, but we help people understand options, document concerns, and seek accountability when prison medical emergencies or ongoing neglect are reported. Our role is to support incarcerated people who need help with prison medical care in Michigan and families who are unsure where to turn.
If you are seeking medical help for a prisoner in Michigan, concerned about prison healthcare neglect, or need guidance on healthcare for incarcerated people in Michigan, Humanity for Prisoners is here to help. Contact us to learn more about our healthcare advocacy work.
