Reentry Assistance

Providing support to people preparing for release

Approximately 96% of people incarcerated in Michigan prisons will eventually return to their families, neighborhoods, and communities. Preparing for that transition can be overwhelming, especially for individuals who may have spent years or decades away from the outside world.

Humanity for Prisoners helps bridge the information gap by connecting incarcerated individuals with resources, guidance, and practical information as they prepare for release. Many people have questions about housing, employment, transportation, identification documents, public assistance, education, and other essential needs long before they return home. Our goal is to help them begin gathering information and developing a plan for a successful transition.

How We Help

Through correspondence, resource sharing, and participation in prison-based reentry events, Humanity for Prisoners helps individuals:

--Learn about available community resources
--Access county-specific resource information
--Explore housing and employment options
--Identify organizations that may provide support after release
--Obtain educational and career-related materials
--Connect with reentry information and guidance

While HFP does not provide housing placement, employment placement, or case management services, we work to ensure people have access to information that can help them make informed decisions and prepare for life after incarceration.

Reentry Resources

Humanity for Prisoners maintains and distributes a variety of reentry-related resources, including:

--HFP Reentry Guide
--Offender Success Community Coordinator contact list
--Calvin University Returning Citizens Service Map
--Housing and community resource information

Individuals often request information about housing options, employers willing to hire returning citizens, transportation, educational opportunities, public assistance programs, food resources, and other community services. HFP helps connect people with the information available to support their planning efforts.

Reentry United

One way Humanity for Prisoners provides reentry support is through participation in Reentry United events organized within Michigan correctional facilities.

These events bring community organizations and incarcerated individuals together before release, creating opportunities to answer questions, distribute resources, and provide information that may help individuals prepare for a successful return home. For many participants, these events offer access to information and community connections that may otherwise be difficult to obtain while incarcerated.
